Is there an age limit to play in tournaments?

No, tournaments are open to all ages.  Players typically range from ages 15 to 50. Return to top

How are the rankings calculated?

See rankings calculation.   Return to top

What are the dimensions of the fields?

The distance from home plate to the outfield fence ranges from 70-90 feet, depending on the specific field and tournament.  Indoor events usually use fields that are slightly shorter, ranging from 60-80 feet.  The width of a field at the outfield fence is approximately 50 feet, again depending on the specific field and tournament.    Return to top

Are the strike zones available for purchase?

Unfortunately, strike zones are not available for purchase.    Return to top

Are there registration deadlines for tournaments?

Typically, the deadline for registering is approximately 5 days before the event.  This can change, however, due to space restrictions and availability.  Registering online is the quickest way to instantly reserve your team’s spot before spots are filled.  Check the home page for updates on availability and deadlines as tournament dates approach.    Return to top

Do you accept personal checks?

No. All payments must be made online via a credit card. This instantly reserves your team's spot.
In instances where a tournament has not reached capacity, we will allow teams to walk-on and register, however, we can NOT reserve or guarantee these spaces ahead of time. There is also an additional $10 walk-on fee. Teams walking on can only pay with cash or money order. Personal checks will NOT be accepted.  Return to top

I would like to pay by credit card, is your website secure?

Yes, all online payments are processed through a secure server.   Return to top

Can I pay when I show up at the tournament?

In instances where a tournament has not reached capacity, we will allow teams to walk-on and register, however, we can NOT reserve or guarantee these spaces ahead of time. There is also an additional $10 walk-on fee. Teams walking on can only pay with cash or money order. Personal checks will NOT be accepted.    Return to top

What happens if it rains on the day of the tournament?

Tournaments will be played regardless of rain.  In the event of a thunderstorm, tournaments will be suspended and/or postponed if necessary.    Return to top

I’m really good, can I play by myself?

Teams can consist of up to 5 players (or 6 players in the youth division).  It is recommended that teams consist of a minimum of 2 or 3 players in order to have a fielder defensively in addition to the pitcher.  However, 1-man teams are perfectly acceptable and have competed well in past tournaments.    Return to top

Is there a youth division?

Most outdoor tournaments have a youth division for ages 11 to 15.  Click here for more details.    Return to top

Can I bring alcohol to the tournament?

No, the use of alcohol at tournaments is strictly prohibited.    Return to top

Can I bring my own equipment?

All balls are provided for teams for use in the tournament.  No outside balls are allowed.  Bats are also provided for teams for use in the tournament, however, outside bats which are regulation Wiffle plastic and have not been altered (taped, weighted, etc.) are allowed at the discretion of NEWA staff.     Return to top

How can I locate other wiffle ball players in my area?

Are there umpires for the games? How are disputes settled?

There are no umpires – teams must keep track of their own counts, baserunners, lineups and scores, and reach decisions together on fair/foul balls, field lines, and safe/out calls.  NEWA Staff will decide disputes that cannot be settled, or those involving questions about rules or rule interpretations.      Return to top

I just started playing wiffle ball, can I still play in your events?

All skill levels are welcome – our tournaments are designed to provide a full day of games for every team, regardless of performance.  Typically, tournament games will match your team against both teams that are experienced as well as those who are new.  Often the best way to improve at the game is to play against a variety of batters and pitchers, some of which may be better than you.    Return to top

I am looking to chat with other wiffle ball players, is there a place where I can do that?

The NEWA bulletin board is a forum used to discuss all aspects of the game by many players around New England. This is a great place to ask other teams questions, share ideas, or read the latest Wiffle ball commentary by players around the region.    Return to top

How do I qualify for the playoffs?

See playoff description.     Return to top

If a batted ball hits the ground in front of the singles line and is fielded cleanly in the air behind the singles line, is it an out?

Yes – a ground ball can still be played for an out until it touches the ground on or behind the singles line.  Once it touches the singles line or the ground behind it, it is a hit.    Return to top

Am I allowed to catch fly balls with my hat?

No – you can only use your hands to make plays in the field.    Return to top

If I catch a home run, but fall over the fence, is it an out?

No – you must remain in the field of play for a caught fly ball to be an out.  In the case of a potential home run at the fence, you cannot climb the fence in order to make a catch.  Your feet must leave the ground in order to make a legal catch.  (Sometimes, in order to save a home run, the only alternative may be to knock the ball back into the field as you fall over the fence.  In this case, the hit would be a double.)      Return to top

Can I use my baseball glove?

No – you can only use your hands to make plays in the field.     Return to top
